What constitutes healthy eating

  1. Healthy eating is a balanced diet combined with daily exercise and weight control.  By following a food pyramid eat more foods such as vegetables, whole grains and less red meat and refined grains.

What should you eat?

  1. Choose good carbs such as whole grains
  2. Pay attention to protein. Fish, poultry, nuts and beans are the best choices
  3. Choose healthy fats, limit saturated fat, and avoid trans fat. Plant oils, nuts and fish are the healthiest sources
  4. Choose a fiber-filled diet, rich in whole grains, vegetables and fruits
  5. Eat more vegetables and fruits. Go for color and variety-dark green, yellow, orange and red
  6. Calcium is important
  7. Moderate drinking can be healthy
  8. A daily multivitamin is a great nutrition insurance policy.

What can we do to improve the healthiness of Derby City Vending’s fresh food?

  1. Use low calorie products whenever possible without compromising the taste and quality of our food using products such as light Miracle Whip, low fat cheeses, etc.
  2. Use unsaturated fats like plant oils, low calorie oil spray for the panini press
  3. Use whole grains instead of just wheat, whole wheat or more fiber enriched breads
  4. Eliminate trans fat such as fried foods, biscuits, baked goods
  5. Offer more fruits and vegetables
  6. Added sugars kept to a minimum

How do we promote the healthiness and freshness of our food?

  1. “Made Fresh Daily” static cling label for the food machine
  2. Heart stickers denoting heart healthy food items
  3. Educated, certified employees on proper food handling, sanitation and health
  4. Nutritional breakdown and information for every food item we make, placed in a booklet at every food account
  5. Healthy choices listed separately on our menu and at least one healthy recipe offered each week on the special menu
  6. Increase the information on our website under the health and nutrition section
  7. Participate and educate our accounts in their wellness campaigns and health fairs
  8. Become experts on health by studying and knowing what foods are the best and why.
  9. Place all of our healthy choice food in one zone of the food machine.
  10. Promote our interest in offering healthy snacks by placing “Fit Pick” labels below the healthy snack item and placing all healthy snacks in one row of the snack machine
