What constitutes healthy eating
- Healthy eating is a balanced diet combined with daily exercise and weight control. By following a food pyramid eat more foods such as vegetables, whole grains and less red meat and refined grains.
What should you eat?
- Choose good carbs such as whole grains
- Pay attention to protein. Fish, poultry, nuts and beans are the best choices
- Choose healthy fats, limit saturated fat, and avoid trans fat. Plant oils, nuts and fish are the healthiest sources
- Choose a fiber-filled diet, rich in whole grains, vegetables and fruits
- Eat more vegetables and fruits. Go for color and variety-dark green, yellow, orange and red
- Calcium is important
- Moderate drinking can be healthy
- A daily multivitamin is a great nutrition insurance policy.
What can we do to improve the healthiness of Derby City Vending’s fresh food?
- Use low calorie products whenever possible without compromising the taste and quality of our food using products such as light Miracle Whip, low fat cheeses, etc.
- Use unsaturated fats like plant oils, low calorie oil spray for the panini press
- Use whole grains instead of just wheat, whole wheat or more fiber enriched breads
- Eliminate trans fat such as fried foods, biscuits, baked goods
- Offer more fruits and vegetables
- Added sugars kept to a minimum
How do we promote the healthiness and freshness of our food?
- “Made Fresh Daily” static cling label for the food machine
- Heart stickers denoting heart healthy food items
- Educated, certified employees on proper food handling, sanitation and health
- Nutritional breakdown and information for every food item we make, placed in a booklet at every food account
- Healthy choices listed separately on our menu and at least one healthy recipe offered each week on the special menu
- Increase the information on our website under the health and nutrition section
- Participate and educate our accounts in their wellness campaigns and health fairs
- Become experts on health by studying and knowing what foods are the best and why.
- Place all of our healthy choice food in one zone of the food machine.
- Promote our interest in offering healthy snacks by placing “Fit Pick” labels below the healthy snack item and placing all healthy snacks in one row of the snack machine
